- Huawei expects to continue taking market share from existing players in the smartphone market
- The company is spreading its dominance even with backlash from the US
“Even without the U.S. market we will be number one in the world,” Richard Yu, Huawei’s consumer division chief, said at a new-product news conference in Beijing this week. “I believe at the earliest this year, and next year at the latest.”
Huawei has been growing its share of the smartphone market, up to 14% from about 5% in 2013. It expects to overtake Samsung by the end of 2020, at the latest.
Huawei has been stuck in the middle of a US/China trade war as their CFO Men Wanzhou is likely to stand trial this year after being detained in Vancouver, Canada. The US is trying to minimize the Chinese company’s influence as Huawei sells more smartphones than Apple, employs twice as many people as Google, and leads the world in 5G technology development.
