- The Corruption Perceptions Index report scores 180 countries and is considered the world’s most widely-used barometer for corruption.
- Surprisingly none of the G8 countries are in the top 8
The 2018 Corruption Perceptions Index report, which has been published by Transparency International annually since 1995, scores 180 countries, and is considered the world’s most widely-used barometer for corruption. Although the index measures perceptions about corruption rather than corruption itself, it gives an idea of which countries face issues with political freedom and economic growth.
Scores range from 0 (most corrupt) to 100 (least corrupt)
Notably, none of the G8 countries were rated in the top 8. Here are their global rankings (GR) and Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score:
Country | Global Ranking | CPI |
Canada | 9th (Tied) | 81 |
United Kingdom | 11th (Tied) | 80 |
Germany | 11th (Tied) | 80 |
Japan | 18th (Tied) | 73 |
France | 21st | 72 |
United States of America | 22nd | 71 |
Italy | 53rd (Tied) | 52 |
Russia | 138th (Tied) | 28 |

I graduated from Queen’s University with a Master’s of Political Studies. The intertwined world of politics and economics intrigue me. My favourite stories to cover are the ones that show how a few selected officials can impact nationwide macro-economic policies. I also follow the broader markets and FOREX.
